When it comes to RC (Radio Control) enthusiasts and professionals, understanding the intricacies of your power system is paramount. One common misconception we’ve encountered is the belief that hardcase batteries are better. This is not accurate for all instances.

The Anatomy of Hardcase LiPo Batteries

Hardcase LiPo (Lithium Polymer) batteries are designed with durability in mind. These batteries are encased in a puncture-resistant shell, offering extra protection against physical damage. However, it’s crucial to recognize that inside these hardcases, the batteries have internal wiring. The connector requires a short piece of wire to bridge to the battery. Connector is typically a factory-made barrel plug.  Since the plug is already soldered onto the battery pack, the wire tends to be very short thus offering reduced resistance.

Why Does This Matter?

Though the connector was factory installed, it does not allow for flexibility to more efficient connectors, like the DEANS© Ultra Plug©. Some users would be tempted to use adaptors which would only increase resistance to the system.  Ensuring that these connections are solid and secure is vital for the optimal performance and safety of your RC vehicle.

Hardcase vs. Softcase LiPo Batteries

While hardcase LiPos offer robust protection, it’s worth noting that softcase LiPo batteries come with their own set of advantages:

  1. Weight Reduction: Softcase batteries are generally lighter because they lack the additional case. This can improve the performance and handling of your RC vehicle, particularly in applications where every gram counts.  The vehicle is designed to handle the potential impacts that could puncture the battery.
  2. Easier Maintenance: With a softcase battery, it’s easier to inspect and identify signs of wear and tear, such as puffing. Puffing indicates that the battery is starting to fail, which is crucial for preventing potential failures and ensuring the longevity of your battery.
  3. Flexibility to Reduce: the wire on the softcase can be shortened even further than that of the hardcase, or alternatively, it can be decided that the speed controller side can be optimized for all the batteries that will be seen in the vehicle.
